Van Halen was so important to the vibe of the "Bill & Ted" trilogy that attempts were made to cast him in all three films, most notably as Rufus, the duo's time-traveling guide. If only they could have persuaded the legendary guitar hero to appear in the movie. Unlike the embarrassing spectacle of watching Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels in their mid-50s reprising their roles as Lloyd and Harry in "Dumb and Dumber To," Winter and Reeves slipped back into their old characters with ease, making it seem totally believable that these were the same dudes who once rocked out in their garage as Wyld Stallyns and dreamed of jamming with Eddie Van Halen. Released almost 30 years after "Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey," it was remarkably consistent in tone and spirit to the original movies, obviously a labor of love for everyone involved. The movies and the show are set in sunny California the stakes are low and the protagonists are unassuming, friendly, and most importantly of all, kind.Īside from the cozy factor, the third installment of the "Bill & Ted" franchise also came as a surprise because it wasn't sh**e. This may be why the era of COVID-19 also saw the unlikely phenomenon of people binge-watching old episodes of "Columbo." Perhaps there isn't too much difference between Bill and Ted and Peter Falk's shambling detective. But the resurgence of interest with the upcoming Bill & Ted Face the Music will hopefully get the complete animated series on DVD.Stuck at home for far longer than natural, it was comforting to hang out with old screen pals in lieu of our real-life friends. and that was simply too far away from the initial premise of wacky time travel adventures.īoth versions of Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventures had short lives on Fox before being canceled. In addition to a downgrade in animation quality, DIC gave Bill and Ted the means to travel into films, books, and even the human body. Perhaps the series could have survived that cast change if the production studio, DIC, hadn’t made other drastic alterations as well. Fox also picked up the animated series for another season, and the new live-ction Bill and Ted replaced Winter and Reeves while Overton stepped in for Carlin. After Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, Fox ordered a TV series with Evan Richards as Bill, Christopher Kennedy as Ted, and Rick Overton as Rufus. which was also called Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventures. Ironically, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventures was partially undone by its live-action counterpart. Few historical figures were safe from Bill and Ted's meddling, but their largely consequence-free time travel was one of the show's charms. This series came out a year before Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, so it used the original Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure as its template. Additionally, that first batch of episodes also managed to recapture the wacky spirit of the first Bill & Ted film. The first season was produced by animation powerhouse Hanna-Barbera and quickly became a hit for CBS. Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves reprised their respective roles as Bill and Ted, while the incomparable George Carlin once again voiced their mentor, Rufus. But the unique thing about Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventures is that it managed to bring most of its key players back to the table. In the '80s and '90s, it wasn’t that unusual for a hit movie to spawn an animated series spinoff.
